Amazon Prime Video has launched its first original film titled Maja Ma, featuring veteran actress Madhuri Dixit in the lead role. The film premiered on the OTT platform today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story:

Tejas Patel (Ritwik Bhowmik) comes from a middle-class family. His parents are Pallavi Tejas (Madhuri Dixit) and Manohar Patel (Gajraj Rao). Tejas, who works in the USA, falls in love with Esha Hansraj (Barkha Singh), an NRI. Esha’s overprotective parents visit Tejas’s family to discuss the marriage. During their visit, a shocking revelation poses a significant hurdle to the wedding. The film unfolds as we discover what this revelation is and whether Tejas and Esha get married.

Plus Points:

The film’s main twist is kept under wraps in the promotional content, delivering a surprising shock in the movie. The initial hour sets up the story well, tackling a sensational topic with fresh storytelling. The scenes where Esha’s parents use lie detector tests to ensure their daughter’s safety are well-executed and humorous. Madhuri Dixit stands out, delivering a masterful performance, especially in emotional scenes. Ritwik Bhowmik and Gajraj Rao also perform their roles commendably. Some dialogues are particularly impactful.

Minus Points:

Despite a strong setup, the film loses momentum in the second half. After the major revelation, the story becomes less engaging with a slow, unexciting narrative. The sensitive topic could have been handled with better execution. The screenplay becomes monotonous with unnecessary scenes, and the climax feels artificial with unconvincing character changes. A crucial character does not get enough screen time, diminishing the film’s emotional depth.

Technical Aspects:

Souumil Sringarpure’s music and Debojeet Ray’s cinematography are decent. The production values are fair, and the director, Anand Tiwari, manages to extract good performances from the cast. However, his handling of the sensitive topic and the overall execution is just average.

Verdict:

Overall, Maja Ma is a bold attempt hindered by mediocre storytelling. The film’s strengths lie in the performances of Madhuri Dixit and the cast, a strong first hour, and some notable dialogues. However, the lackluster second half, poor execution, and weak climax make it an average watch for the weekend.
