After the release of Liger on Thursday, a smaller film titled Kalapuram has premiered today. Directed by Karuna Kumar, known for Palasa, the film features Satyam Rajesh in the lead role. Here’s a look at what Kalapuram offers.

Story:

Kumar (Satyam Rajesh) is an aspiring director struggling to break into the film industry. His setbacks extend to his personal life, where he faces rejection both professionally and romantically. A self-proclaimed producer offers Kumar a chance to direct his debut film, provided he shoots it in his village, Kalapuram. Upon arriving, Kumar is duped in a scam. The remainder of the film explores Kumar’s journey to resolve these challenges and complete his debut project.

Strengths:

The first half of the film presents some engaging moments. It effectively portrays the struggles of a director trying to navigate the industry and the personal disappointments he faces. Satyam Rajesh’s portrayal of emotional turmoil during the love track is notable.

The transition to Kalapuram and the introduction of its rustic characters are handled well. Janardhan, who plays the scheming producer, delivers a strong performance. Pradeep Rudra, despite a minor role, contributes effectively. The second half includes several humorous scenes related to the filmmaking process, which are well-executed.

Satyam Rajesh continues to impress with his sincere acting. His emotional scenes during the breakup are particularly compelling.

Weaknesses:

The second half of the film suffers from a lack of depth, with a thin plot that feels uninspired. The concept of a hero working with village locals to make a film has been seen before and doesn’t add new dimensions to the story.

A key twist later in the film appears exaggerated and unrealistic. Although the premise has potential for comedy and emotional depth, the execution falls short. The transition from Kumar’s struggles to his filmmaking process lacks clarity and depth.

Technical Aspects:

Despite a modest budget, the production values are commendable. The cinematography effectively captures the village setting, and Mani Sharma’s music enhances the film. The production design also contributes positively.

Director Karuna Kumar, in his third film, is known for his emotional storytelling but attempts a lighter, twist-laden narrative here. While the film begins with promise, it loses momentum in the second half due to its lack of seriousness and engaging scenes.

Verdict:

Kalapuram is a village drama that begins with potential but falters in its second half. While Satyam Rajesh delivers a commendable performance, the film overall falls short, offering limited appeal as a weekend watch.
