Synopsis:

Karthik Aaryan, known for his streak of hit films, has surprised fans with the release of his latest movie “Freddy” on Disney Plus Hotstar, with Alaya F in the female lead role. The movie is now available for streaming on the OTT platform.

Plot:

Freddy Ginwala (Karthik Aaryan) is a successful but introverted dentist. In his quest for a soulmate, Freddy joins a matrimony website but struggles due to his low self-esteem and shyness. He meets Kainaaz Irani (Alaya F), a married woman suffering abuse from her husband Rustom (Sajjad Delafrooz). Freddy and Kainaaz are drawn to each other, and Freddy suggests that they eliminate Rustom to be together. The story unfolds as they take action and face the resulting consequences.

Highlights:

Karthik Aaryan breaks away from his usual roles of a romantic lead and comedian, delivering a compelling performance as the introverted and insecure Freddy. His nuanced body language and expressions highlight his growth as an actor. Aaryan’s portrayal, particularly in a key emotional breakdown scene, stands out as a significant achievement in his career.

Alaya F impresses as Kainaaz, a woman enduring domestic abuse. She brings depth to her role with a captivating performance and excellent chemistry with Aaryan. The film gains momentum in the second half with a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between the main characters and a well-executed climax that incorporates some humor.

Drawbacks:

Despite the freedom afforded by the OTT platform, the filmmakers adhered to a conventional storyline, offering nothing particularly unique. The plot is reminiscent of an older Hindi film, leading to predictability. The decision to withhold the trailer release suggests the filmmakers were aware of this.

The police investigation in the film is portrayed unrealistically, with officers accepting Freddy’s statements without verification. Such logical inconsistencies weaken the thriller. Additionally, the first half of the movie drags with overly long scenes.

Technical Aspects:

The production design effectively captures the film’s dark tone, and Clinton Cerejo’s background score complements it well. Ayananka Bose’s cinematography is commendable, though the editing by Chandan Arora could have been tighter, particularly in the first half. The production values are high.

Director Shashanka Ghosh delivers a competent but not exceptional effort with “Freddy.” While it’s an improvement over his previous work, “Plan A Plan B,” it falls short of expectations, especially with a talent like Karthik Aaryan leading the cast. Ghosh sticks to a formulaic thriller structure that, despite its moments, feels unoriginal.

Conclusion:

Overall, “Freddy” is an adequate thriller with notable moments in the second half. Karthik Aaryan’s impressive transformation and performance are the film’s highlights. However, the clichéd plot and predictability detract from its potential. It’s worth a watch if approached with modest expectations.
