Review of Devara: Part 1

The much-anticipated film Devara: Part 1, featuring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles, has finally been released. Directed by Koratala Siva, this high-budget production has garnered substantial attention and expectations. Let’s dive into the details of how the film fares.

Story:

Set in the coastal village of Ratnagiri near the Red Sea, Devara: Part 1 introduces key figures like Devara (Jr NTR), Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan), and Rayappa (Srikanth), who dominate their respective areas. They are involved in assisting a powerful smuggler, Muruga (Murali Sharma), in transporting illegal goods via ships. However, Devara realizes the wrongdoing in their activities, leading to a conflict with Bhaira, who does not share the same moral concerns. This tension prompts Bhaira to plan Devara’s demise. After a twist of fate, Devara vanishes, and the story skips twelve years into the future, where Bhaira has taken control of Ratnagiri and remains fixated on hunting down Devara.

Meanwhile, Vara, Devara’s innocent and helpless son, unexpectedly aligns himself with Bhaira. The key questions that drive the plot are: Why does Vara join forces with Bhaira? Is he betraying his father? Does he harbor negative memories of Devara? Is Devara still alive, and if so, where has he been all these years? Has Bhaira succeeded in eliminating him, or is the final confrontation yet to come?

Positives:

Jr NTR delivers another stellar performance, effortlessly portraying two distinct characters—Devara and Vara. As Devara, he exudes both humility and raw power, while his depiction of Vara captures innocence and vulnerability. NTR successfully differentiates the two characters, keeping the audience captivated.

Saif Ali Khan impresses with his role as Bhaira, a man fueled by vengeance against Devara. This marks a strong debut for him in the Telugu film industry. Janhvi Kapoor, though limited in screen time, adds a refreshing dynamic to her scenes with Jr NTR.

The action sequences are thrilling and well-executed, eliciting an enthusiastic response from the audience. Several impactful dialogues further elevate Devara’s character, adding layers to the storytelling. Supporting actors like Srikanth, Prakash Raj, and others also deliver commendable performances.

Drawbacks:

While the storyline offers plenty of entertainment, it lacks unpredictability. Koratala Siva’s screenplay could have been tighter, especially in the second half where the pacing slows down. Some scenes lack effective execution, and additional polish could have significantly improved the film.

Janhvi Kapoor’s character does not have enough screen time to showcase her full potential, which may disappoint her fans. Prakash Raj’s portrayal is decent, but his character’s background could have been fleshed out better.

Similarly, Saif Ali Khan’s character loses some of its initial impact in the latter part of the film, and the climax feels somewhat rushed, leaving the audience with a sense of abruptness.

Technical Aspects:

Koratala Siva succeeds as both the writer and director, although the writing, especially in the second half, could have used more depth. The emotional aspects of the story remain somewhat underdeveloped.

Cinematographer R. Rathnavelu and music composer Anirudh Ravichander deliver outstanding work, elevating the visual and auditory experience. Editor A. Sreekar Prasad’s work is generally satisfactory but could have been more refined in the latter half. The action choreography is top-notch, and the overall production values are impressive.

Conclusion:

Overall, Devara: Part 1 offers a solid dose of action and entertainment, led by Jr NTR’s standout performance. While the film suffers from a predictable plot and some pacing issues in the second half, it is still a movie worth watching for fans of the genre. Saif Ali Khan’s impressive debut in Telugu cinema and Janhvi Kapoor’s charm are additional highlights. It’s a film that promises a great cinematic experience despite its few shortcomings. Make sure to catch it this weekend!
