Review of “Connect”:

Nayanthara returns with another female-led film titled “Connect,” directed by Ashwin Saravanan. This horror thriller has now been released in Telugu. Here’s our review.

Story:

The plot centers on Susan (Nayanthara), who loses her husband (Vinay Rai) to Covid, profoundly affecting their daughter Anna. Desperate to communicate with her deceased father, Anna seeks assistance from an external force. However, an unexpected spirit enters Anna, causing chaos in the family. The film explores how Susan deals with this crisis and the help she seeks.

Positive Points:

The film effectively sets a tense atmosphere, despite being confined to just two rooms. The climax is particularly well-executed, especially the scenes involving the spirit’s departure. The actress playing Anna delivers a strong performance in her pivotal role. Anupam Kher, portraying a priest, adds depth to the narrative with his compelling performance. Vinay Rai and Sathyaraj are adequate in their roles, though Sathyaraj’s performance becomes exaggerated in the latter part of the film. Nayanthara delivers a competent performance, maintaining the film’s watchability.

Negative Points:

The film, produced by Vignesh Shivan, struggles with originality in its storyline. Themes of an evil spirit possessing a girl and a priest coming to her aid are overused. Logical inconsistencies abound, such as the unclear motivations behind Anna’s attempt to contact her father’s spirit and the unexplained backstory of the possessing spirit. The narrative feels like a short film stretched into a feature-length movie, lacking emotional depth and failing to effectively convey the mother’s distress over her daughter’s ordeal. Aside from a few thrilling moments, the film offers little novelty.

Technical Aspects:

Given its limited setting, the film’s cinematography needed to excel, and it does. However, the background score could have been more impactful. The Telugu dubbing and production values are satisfactory. Director Ashwin Saravanan, known for his previous work “Game Over,” attempts to create a compelling thriller but falls short. The film’s structure, divided into quarantine days, is intended to build suspense but often ends scenes abruptly, frustrating the audience.

Verdict:

Overall, Nayanthara’s “Connect” fails to deliver a compelling horror thriller experience. Despite a strong climax and Nayanthara’s performance, the film suffers from a lackluster plot, weak narration, and uninspired thrills, making it a disappointing watch.
