ZEE5 presents a thought-provoking web series titled “Ayali,” featuring child actress Abhi Nakshatra in the lead role. Set in the village of Veerapannai, the series delves into the age-old customs and traditions that restrict the growth of women, particularly focusing on Ezhil Selvi’s (Abhi Nakshatra) journey to challenge these norms and pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
The series effectively addresses themes of misogyny and superstitions prevalent in society, emphasizing women empowerment and breaking stereotypes. The narrative, skillfully crafted by the writing team, avoids becoming preachy and delivers a compelling message. Abhi Nakshatra delivers a standout performance, portraying Ezhil’s character with depth and emotion, supported by a talented ensemble cast.
While the series excels in its storytelling and performances, it does have its drawbacks. Some untranslated Tamil songs and misplaced comedy scenes detract from the overall impact. Additionally, pacing issues and a lengthy runtime hinder the viewing experience, culminating in a somewhat underwhelming climax.
Technically, “Ayali” shines with its authentic rural setting, commendable cinematography, and adequate production values. Director Muthu Kumar’s adept handling of emotional scenes and nuanced storytelling deserves praise, despite minor shortcomings in editing.
In conclusion, “Ayali” effectively sheds light on societal patriarchy, featuring commendable performances and poignant moments. While it may not be without flaws, it remains a worthwhile watch, offering valuable insights into pressing social issues.
